Charming Small House

Love this little house.

So, I’d need a sewing room…

And I don’t see where they eat…

but I love the clever spaces in this small house.

Enjoy!

Mid-March Project Update

Ironically, today is the first day of spring.

And it is warmer, but it’s also snowing outside.

Though it’s wet and dreary, my heart has been warmed by Kathleen Nixon’s visit for my birthday.

She was to have come yesterday, but the storm grounded flights, so she arrived bright and cheerful at noon today.  We had a sushi lunch at Mr. Wat’s, a coffee at Zoots, and will have what will be a wonderful dinner at the Hartstone Inn (thanks to Gina Caceci).  Tomorrow we’re going to a special showing of the uncut version of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA at The Strand in Rockland, Maine (where we’ll have some POPCORN).  Afterwards, we’ll have an early dinner at Mirandas in Rockland–a favorite place for both of us.  I have to let her go on Monday, but will take her down to Portland and will do some errands on the way home.

I have been working on the big quilt this past week.  It just needs one more border:

IMG_0226

Which is almost done:

IMG_0223

This is a VERY BIG quilt…

Here are some close-ups:

IMG_0229

AND this one, which shows how much of my focus fabric I’ve been able to use:

IMG_0230

It’s interesting and inspired by Kaffe Fasset’s low-contrast style of quilting.  AND by the American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine’s low contrast “quilt along” of last year.

This year their challenge is to work with four patches–and the above quilt actually uses a lot of four patches.  BUT, I am much more intrigued by the four-patches on point that Bonnie Hunter is making for her part in the magazine’s challenge.  So, these patches have become my current leader/ender project.

IMG_0217

I have no idea how Bonnie is going to set hers, and I’m hoping she will do a “reveal” on April 3rd, the end of the challenge.  If not, I’ll open my EQ7 quilting design program and get to work.

Here’s a close-up.

IMG_0218

I have 20 blocks done now, but truthfully, I could just disappear from the world and sew these fun blocks until I drop.

Remember that I have a whole box of two-inch squares that need using…

IMG_0186

Maybe I’ll do a marathon session and sew these into light/dark four patches…

Meanwhile, the chickens are out every day now and hang out at my quilting room windows where they try to talk to me:

IMG_0215

Barb Melchiskey challenged our group to complete one UFO for our May challenge meeting.  I have a handful of planned quilt projects all folded up together.  This one is at least nine years old:

IMG_0224

And it’s pretty fabric that I still like:

IMG_0225

It wants to be a quilt for a male person…

And I have one in mind…

So, I will start it when the big blue quilt is…quilted.

Happy spring everyone!

Medicine:  Informed Choice/Informed Consent

I’ve heard two vaccine stories recently that are important to understanding the impact of the vaccine cultural war ongoing in America today.

I want to share them with you.

First, a young woman wrote that she recently burned her hand badly, and her husband took her to the emergency room of their local hospital.  They gave her morphine for the pain, which kind of put her out of it for a while.  The hospital staff asked her husband if his wife had had recent vaccine boosters.  He said that she had not and did not use vaccines.  Later, at home, the woman started itching.  She looked at the hospital papers and realized that she had been given a DtaP vaccine (Diphtheria, tetanus, and Pertussis) WITHOUT HER EXPRESS CONSENT.  That shot is a live virus and sheds, so she had to take precautions so that her children did not get infected with any of these three diseases.  She itched for several weeks after that shot, and she is still somewhat in shock that such a thing could happen to her in an American hospital when she had been drugged.

INFORMED CONSENT to medical procedures is a basic human right in this country.  This is a civil rights issue.  I hope that this story helps make you understand that in this present moment, you cannot count on medical personnel to honor your rights to informed consent.

Second, in my own family, we are eagerly anticipating the birth of my seventh grandchild in mid April.  This week, this family’s pediatrician sent them a letter saying that if the older two children did not get the three MMR vaccines, the family would be dropped from the practice–which means that these pediatricians will not be performing the well-baby check on our little newborn when she arrives.

The rationale is that they don’t want unvaccinated children in the waiting room infecting their vaccinated patients.  BUT WAIT, it’s the VACCINATED children who are shedding live virus disease.  So, it’s really the unvaccinated children who are at the most risk.  Let’s be clear that this behavior is medical bullying.  And let’s be clear that what this behavior is really all about is that without vaccines and well-baby checks that dispense vaccines, many pediatricians are going to be flat out of business.  And I truly hope that this kind of pediatric practice goes under–the sooner the better as they are promoting voodoo “science” and creating hysteria–all for the almighty dollar.  If it’s the case that they are truly uninformed on vaccine dangers, then they are stupid and no one should be going to them.

Remember, the Supreme Court ruled that vaccines are inherently dangerous.  That’s the reason why industry and doctors cannot be sued.  So I don’t care what your orientation to vaccines is, it is not ok to make anyone get a medical procedure that is deemed inherently dangerous.  That choice has to be made by those involved for themselves–and hopefully that choice will be an INFORMED one, which means those involved need to do deeper research than talking to their doctors.

Barbara Loe Fisher’s piece on the vaccine cultural war is circulating on the internet.  I hope you read it.  I hope that you go to the bottom and look at the section on vaccine myths.  Fisher started the National Vaccine Information Center after her own child was damaged.  She is not anti-vaccine for everyone.  She wants a safe vaccine policy, an open dialog about vaccines that looks at the actual science and history of them, and for INFORMED CHOICE.

My Essays: “My News Break”

My News Break

February 2015

I’ve been on a “news break” for about eighteen months now.

I don’t watch ANY news programs on MSNBC, CNN, or Fox (which I could never watch for longer than 5 minutes anyway).

I don’t listen to the news-type NPR podcasts I used to enjoy while quilting, like Diane Rehm and Tom Ashbrook.  I love Garrison Keiler, Stuart McLean and Terry Gross, but I  have not made time to catch their programs.  Instead, I’ve been downloading audio books from the Maine State Library System through my local library.  I am loving disappearing into the bliss of sewing and hearing a professional read a book to me.

Why the news break?

Sometime last year, I began to think seriously about how upsetting all these news programs are.  How addictive.  How toxic it is to listen–day in and day out–to the outrages, or perceived outrages, perpetrated by people in power.  Mostly, I’ve felt there is very little I personally can do to rectify the excesses of late capitalism, where industries have captured our democracy and are busily enslaving us all to an endless need for more and more money.

It’s been such a peaceful year, a year full of laughter with friends and family, great sleep, soothing sewing, relaxing reading, and restorative time spent in nature.

I’m pretty clear that I won’t, that I cannot, go back to the toxicity of the news circuit.

I’m going to be seventy this March 2015.  I tell myself that I’ve earned the right to a peaceful decade or so.  I tell myself that I don’t feel guilty for turning over the responsibility for this nation to the younger generations.  I’ve done my part, right?

I’ll continue to read, to think, and to put that information up on my blog. I am a life-long student deep inside myself.  I can remember clearly that at age nine or ten my parents gave me a beautiful new bike and my own library card–which meant I could go to the library whenever I wanted.  I remember snuggling into a round, soft, living room armchair after school and reading, reading, reading.  My mother used to say that at breakfast I’d read the back of the cereal boxes.

Turning over the responsibility for change gives me a certain emotional distance from the information I share.  I like to believe that I read and think for those who do not have the time to do so.  My blog posts are meant to be guides which lead people to explore for themselves serious health issues.

But, I have another side.  I was born to warrior parents.  My military dad was a stone cold, decorated, World War II hero, and my feisty southern mother insisted we be truthful and honorable.  It turns out my name, Louisa, springs from a celtic word meaning warrior woman.  My mother thought she was giving me a family name that goes way back, but now that I think about it, one family story is about an early Louisa who lived on the 1830s Georgia frontier and who stood down an Indian man who appeared in her front yard.

Recently, though, my need for quiet peace has run headlong into my warrior woman blood.  The news that Americans are losing the right to control their own bodies has come filtering through my news barrier.

The founding principle of classical liberalism is the right to own one’s own body.  We’ve had war drafts in the past, in the name of national safety, but for the most part now, unless one breaks the law, we, not kings or liege lords or the military, have the right to control our own bodies.

Or, at least we used to…

Now, in this moment of American late capitalism, our government, our laws and courts, our politicians, and our media are controlled by industry.  Under the guise of public safety and the “rights” of children, we have lost or are losing our rights to our bodies and our rights as parents to protect our children’s bodies.

Supported by the courts, doctors can take and have taken children away from their parents to perform chemotherapy, in the name of “saving” these children from cancer, though statistics around the use of chemicals to treat cancer are beyond abysmal.  Many of these children are suffering and dying even more horrific deaths than they would have if left alone.

Some states, like New York, have mandated vaccines for ALL children, regardless of whether or not they have had serious reactions to earlier vaccines.  Recently, a New York court upheld this practice based on a 1905 law.  (Who, then, are the children this “herd immunity” is supposed to protect if not a child with a serious vaccine reaction?)

California schools can vaccinate children with Gardasil without parents’ consent or knowledge.  California is letting the 12-year olds decide.  (Ironically, the HPV virus might not be connected to cervical cancer at all, and Gardasil, which was fast-tracked and untested for safety, is killing young women.)

Religious and philosophical exemptions for vaccines are being rolled back state by state.  My own state of Maine is considering watering down the right for vaccine exemptions by making parents first visit a doctor to be “educated.”

This week, an incoming email revealed that Democratic Senators Feinstein and Boxer of California are proposing a new national law that will MANDATE an adult vaccination program—which is kind of a sideways admission that vaccines don’t create permanent, full immunity.  (Here’s how the vaccine industry will expand its market share.)

In one of our local papers, The Free Press, a doctor is writing columns urging people to vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate.  Vaccinations, he writes, will cure all the chronic illnesses our children are now having.

As horrified as I am by this vaccine cultural war, I am intrigued also in terms of my field:  Cultural Studies—the study of systems of cultural power, such as can develop in any system where industry, the government, the media, the police/army, and the courts are intertwined and marching forward toward each particular system’s own ends.  When this situation happens, there are no brakes in place as they’ve all been dismantled.  The result is that in America today, there is no longer a “democracy.”  People are no longer protected from the excesses of industries seeking more money.  Our bodies can be and are being coopted to that agenda.

Our current vaccine policy is a poster child for what can and does happen.  Industry is given the right to perform the safety studies for a new product.  The new product has problems, so industry creates false science about the product’s safety and efficacy.  Our government regulatory agencies—run now by political appointees from industry—accepts industry’s “science”—even over the objections of government scientists who point to flaws in the industry-created science.  Along the way, industry gets politicians to pass laws that prevent industry from being sued when its harmful product harms someone.

Next, industry mounts massive advertising campaigns in which industry lies about its products, such as the lie that the science about vaccines is a done deal.  Or the lie that vaccines eradicated certain diseases.  Or the lie that vaccines are safe for “almost” everyone.  Or the fear-mongering lie that childhood diseases that give life-long immunity are “killers.”  Or the lie that the unvaccinated are spreading disease when it’s the vaccinated and/or those from abroad who come in with different strains of a disease.  Or the lie that vaccines give life-long immunity—a lie industry is now revising so that it can give adults booster vaccines.  So that last lie is now saying that if everyone is vaccinated, “herd immunity” can be achieved.

This situation is what I have been calling a kool-aid circuit on my blog—after Jim Jones, who convinced his followers to follow him to Africa and to drink the poisoned kool-aid he offered them.  No one objected, and death followed swiftly.

Here’s how a kool-aid circuit works:  first, the media, doctors, public health officials, politicians, and the public believe these industry lies without doing even the most simple research.  They believe because everyone trusts that the industry-colonized government is protecting us.  The public trusts their doctors, their public health officials, and the media as they all repeat the industry-created lies.  Everyone believes until they come face to face with horrific harm in their own family or among their friends.  Scratch the surface of most anti-vaxers, and you’ll find someone with a hurt loved one.

Anyone who challenges these lies is demonized, fired, and no longer funded.  Published studies, good studies, are deemed to be the work of “quacks.”  Hysteria about public safety is created and fomented.  The unethical idea evolves that it’s all right to kill or permanently maim someone else’s child with a mandated vaccine as long as your child is protected.  Anyone whose child is harmed cannot sue the vaccine industry and gets no help with a child who now requires massive, permanent aid.  Accurate statistics of harm are not collected.

How do I manage the conflict inside myself when my need for peace and the reality of my warrior blood collide—as they have with this vaccine juggernaut issue?  The local doctor’s columns, a newly proposed law here in Maine that dilutes our vaccine exemptions, and Senators Feinstein and Boxer’s proposed adult vaccine mandate has pushed me over the edge.  I spent several sleepless nights writing letters in my head after the local doctor’s “kool-aid” published response to a local woman who wrote to question what he was saying—a response that just repeated more industry propaganda and mostly ignored her valid questions.

I have gifts.  I have been so lucky to have acquired the education and the research and writing skills that few other people have.  Through research I know solid information that can prevent harm to others.  Do I have the right to impose my peace agenda on who I am, what I know, and what I can do?  I know what my parents would say:  what is occurring is neither truthful nor honorable, and it’s harming people.

My body demanded writing.  I wrote a letter to the local paper refuting the doctor’s industry propaganda, a letter that urged readers to research for themselves and that gave them some easy, but reputable places to start.  I wrote a short letter that I sent to Senators Feinstein and Boxer, asking them to look deeper into the vaccine issue and to recognize the role of industry.  Again, I included easy research sites.  I sent the letter to my two Maine senators.  I wrote to NPR to tell them why I’m not going to give them any more money until they stop repeating the kool-aid and start to report the whole of the vaccine issue.  I will write to the Maine state representative—a retired doctor—who is proposing a law that will dilute Maine’s religious and philosophical exemption for vaccines.  I will continue to post good vaccine information on my blog.

My internal roiling has stopped for the moment.  I’ve done my part toward trying to guide people to look deeper, to understand what is happening, and to resist an inherently and legally dangerous practice.  Peace is gradually returning.  I know I have to trust that enough people will educate themselves to effect a change.

But…I ordered two well-regarded books on vaccines this morning.  One looks at vaccine history and the other at the role of the vaccine industry.

So, yes, I’ll do what I can to stand down that indian in my front yard.

PS:  THE FREE PRESS refused to publish my letter, and therein lies the problem with a kool-aid circuit.  No contrary information is allowed, no matter how genuine.

Books and Interesting Information: Polio and the Polio Vaccine

Polio and the Polio Vaccine

Somewhere along my journey of learning about vaccines, I asked myself what vaccines might be worth getting.

Polio topped the list.  Along with tetanus maybe.

The other diseases, I thought, would fare rather well being treated with today’s advanced medical abilities–assuming the infected person did not have significant other problems like being malnourished or having another debilitating disease like cancer.  Later I decided that since tetanus has such specific conditions–a puncture wound that cuts off oxygen and allows the tetanus organism to flourish–I would take my chances.  Surely I would know if I had a deep puncture wound and could get a booster if I thought it necessary.

Polio was the scary disease of my childhood.  At one point in the 1950s, my mother left Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana, and took us home to her little hometown, Reynolds, Georgia.  The feeling at the time was that urban areas were more dangerous than small towns in the rural south.  And I still remember pictures of people in iron lungs.

Since then, I’ve learned that the subject of polio is not as clear cut as we might believe.

DISSOLVING ILLUSIONS:  DISEASE, VACCINES, AND THE FORGOTTEN HISTORY by Suzanne Humphries and Roman Bystrianyk is reviewed by Martin Michener in the Wise Traditions Fall 2014 issue. Michener has a PhD and teaches biology, ecology, and farming as an adjunct professor.

Dissolving Illusions by Suzanne Humphries & Roman Bystrianyk | Weston A Price.

Reading the review is a really good place to get an idea of what is covered in this important book.

The book covers the history of 14 contagious diseases.  The authors rarely interject opinion:  they just assemble information and let reader’s make up their own minds.  Michener writes that the book is really useful for parents who are trying to educate themselves and for doctors who need to slow down and review the history of vaccines as “cures” for diseases.  Warning:  this book is not an easy read.  For an easier read download Tetyana Obukhanych’s VACCINE ILLUSION.

Michener’s review attempts to highlight the major points he walked away with.  For starters, the describes the incredible intricacy of our immune systems and how little we actually know about how it works.  Or, doesn’t:

It is staggeringly complex, comprising at least fifteen different cell-types that spew dozens of different molecules into the blood to communicate with one another and to do battle. Within each of those cell types sit tens of thousands of genes whose activity can be altered by age, exercise, infection, vaccination status, diet, stress, you name it. . . That’s an awful lot of moving parts. And we don’t know what the vast majority of them do, or should be doing. . . we can’t even be sure how to tell when the immune system’s not working right, let alone why not, because we don’t have good metrics of what a healthy human immune system looks like. Despite billions spent on immune stimulants in super-markets and drugstores last year, we don’t know what—if anything—those really do, or what “immune stimulant” even means.

As for polio–there is a history…one that involves redefining what polio is…which alters statistical data so that the real polio (and pesticide damage) is hidden.  Here’s the Michener section on polio:

Dissolving Illusions next systematically takes us on the long journeys of improving illnesses for polio, whooping cough and measles. Graphs show most of the improving story, as diseases become less infectious and deadly. Approximately 98 percent of this improvement came before the corresponding vaccines were ever available, but that never daunted the enthusiasts from claiming full credit, post hoc, for improved conditions.

The whole polio story takes many particularly devious turns, where much, perhaps most, of the causes for paralysis were initially unrelated to the actual poliomyelitis virus. In 1954, on arrival of the Salk vaccine, the disease was immediately completely re-defined almost out of existence. Early polio medical treatment apparently was far more damaging than the disease, with anesthesia and rigid casts put on children, then allowing the children to scream in pain for up to several days. Through the considerable efforts of Sister Elizabeth Kenny, who administered almost the exact opposite treatments, it was later found and admitted that the early treatment caused the nervous control of their muscles to perish forever. Doctors who employed vitamin C and physical therapy reported zero paralyses.

There are so many causes for “polio” paralysis it would take a page to list them here, but only the virus is now recognized by the redefinition. Figure 12.4 on page 249 was used from Jim West’s article in this journal, “Pesticides and Polio” (http://www.westonaprice.org/health-topics/pesticides-and-polio-a-critique-of-scientificliterature/). From examining the figure, you may realize that much of the paralysis outbreak in the period between 1940 and 1955 was actually due to acute arsenic or DDT exposure from untested pesticides, mostly on farms. After the redefinition, including much more rigorous criteria for the diagnosis of “polio,” pesticide paralysis has continued, but it no longer had any effect on the records of “the new vaccine-cured polio” cases. Outside the U.S.A., where DDT is widely sold and used, any news of human paralysis simply threatens our precious export markets.

The horrible “iron lung” polio cases, rather than being solved by vaccine, were also cleanly swept under the definition rug. On p. 241 of Dissolving Illusions the authors make a rare summarizing statement: “Does the public have any idea that there are hundreds of cases of something that is now called transverse myelitis that would have historically been called polio and is now leaving children permanently dependent on a modern version of the iron lung?” Polio virus continues to infect today, but like the other illnesses has become almost benign.

So, what about pertussis, or whooping cough and vaccines?

One fascinating problem has been identified, described in connection with the problematic vaccination for pertussis (whooping cough). When a youngster first gets the wild infection, B. pertussis, the bacteria attach to bronchial cells and secrete a compound abbreviated as ACT, which fools the immune system into a false truce. After a few weeks of coughing, the system wakes up to the deception and forms a remembered response, which then completely heals the infection. Any future infection is met by this immunity, which typically lasts about thirty years. Enter the vaccine form of the bacterium, sans ACT. The immune system now develops a different, permanent set of responses, minus the knowledge of ACT. Now, every new infection with wild or vaccine-strain pertussis produces the same prolonged ACT phase, and, contrary to the contention of Mr. Bush, you do get fooled again and again. This is called Original Antigen Sin, or OAS, meaning the first time is all you get, to get it right. So what? Pertussis is now a mostly-undiagnosed adult disease, with adult carriers infecting everybody, endemically, instead of a once-will-do-it childhood disease.

I’ve ordered the book out of sheer curiosity and a desire to understand more of this complicated vaccine subject.  Fortunately, my children “get” the vaccine problem now, so while the older grandchildren did get some vaccines, the younger ones have not.  Fortunately, I don’t have to battle with schools about vaccines like my children do.  If Senators Feinstein and Boxer of California have their way though, I may have to battle for my right as an adult to control what goes into my body.  Feinstein and Boxer are spearheading a national vaccine law mandating that adults get boosters in what will be a government-dictated schedule. And that’s how the market increases its market share.

If you need more information on vaccines, at least read this review.

Low Contrast Quilt

The scrappy low-contrast quilt is coming along.

This quilt is inspired by Kaffe Fasset, who often works low-contrast with lush fabrics, and by Bonnie Hunter’s scrap system.

The little blocks are from the 2 1/2-inch scraps.  I am using a focus fabric I thought would blend with the many shades of the blue blocks.

The right border is almost finished and will go on today.

And, then what?  It’s 76-inches square now, and I may call it a day.  But I’d like it to be a bit bigger–say 10 inches.  I may go out to one more 2-inch border and an outer border of the little squares.  Don’t know yet…

IMG_0212

Here’s a close-up of the outer border blocks:

I used the Companion Angle Ruler to cut these block pieces–as Bonnie Hunter recommends.  And I LOVED how easy it was and how beautifully the pieces come together.

Wild Turkeys in Spring Video

I know I’ve put up many videos about the wild turkeys and the chickens.

But, it’s spring, and the turkeys have formed a large flock again–and will start mating.  I am encouraged by how many have survived February 2015.  I can’t imagine what they managed to eat–beyond my bits of sunflower seeds.

The chickens are wild with delight to be allowed out of the coop/cage.  This time of year is ALWAYS a risk for them.  You saw the shots of one getting stuck in the snow pack posted yesterday.  Her feet, by the way, seem to be hurt, but not lethally hurt.  And fox is having babies now and will need to feed those babies.  Life is always already risky, isn’t it…

Chicken Stuck in Snow

Today dawned to be beautiful.  Warm and sunny.  Warm for Maine that is.

It was warm enough for the chickens to agree to come out of their cage/coop.

We are all feeling the rising sap and energy of SPRING, even though the snow pack out here is still about four feet thick.

I dug out the flap to the chicken coop, propped open the coop roof, and out they came to eat the mealy worm and sunflower seed treats.

Back inside, while eating my breakfast and making plans for a run up to Belfast, I saw that the rooster and a few of the hens were up on the upper porch.

When I got back from Belfast, I checked on the flock.

Here’s what I saw up on the hill:

IMG_0206

I called, and she craned her head, but did not move.

Here’s a closer view:

IMG_0205

Something had spooked her, and she had flown up into the snow pack and gotten herself stuck.

There was nothing to do but go get her.

She is fully exposed and a “sitting duck” chicken waiting for a predator.

Out came the snow shoes:

IMG_0207

I had to fit them to the larger boots I got just before John died.  I figured it out.  Thank heavens I have a good pair.  They were a birthday gift from John in 2004 when we knew we were moving to Maine.

IMG_0210

The chickens, as always, milled about, trying to help.

IMG_0208

(The turkeys have spread the old chicken bedding out over the banks and paths.)

I got to her, after working my way around the large white pine.  I was able to take advantage of the paths the turkeys and the dogs have made in the snow.  And, yes, sister Susan, I took my cell phone.

I poked her with the long end of the ski pole, and she didn’t move.  Yep.   Her feet were stuck.  I climbed the hill to her and picked her up.  She was limp and scared and probably somewhat dehydrated.

She could not walk when I put her on the turkey/dog path–and by this time the rest of the flock had followed me.

Were her feet just numb, or were they frozen or badly frost bitten.  Hens do have a way of going limp when they are scared.

I have no idea how long she had been stuck.

I carried her under my arm back the way I came and put her through the flap to the coop.  She ducked inside, so she could walk.

But, as I stopped at the edge of the porch to take off the snow shoes (they have wicked grippers on the bottom), I saw that she had followed me and that her feet were turning a dark red…

…so I don’t know how badly she might be hurt.

Time will tell.

She was eating.
