FOOD SENSITIVITIES:  Amy Myers, MD

Amy Myers is a functional medicine MD.

Here’s an url to her site–which at the moment is featuring 10 signs of food sensitivities.

I used to be totally incapacitated with seasonal allergies–that started to be year round.  Bummer.

But when I began to make the connections between certain foods I was eating and stopped eating them, the seasonal allergies went away.

I don’t really have them any more–or not the streaming eyes, blowing nose version.  (I do have heightened sensitivities in the early spring that certain foods can trigger–foods I can eat just fine the rest of the year.)

I will say that I also work with a homeopath and have for about 10 years now, and I know she has made a huge difference in my constitutional health.  (I don’t seem to get poison ivy any more, for instance.)

Household Bleach Exposure Increases Infection Rate in Children

When my mother got really sick, and we children had to clean out her house, I took on the bathrooms.  I wanted them to be really clean so the house would show better.  The bathrooms were old at this stage, and there was a lot of “stuff” in the grout on the floor–after years of use and just surface cleaning.  I used almost pure bleach to scrub the tiles clean.  Now, mother’s bathrooms were not big, so the spaces were very confined.  Additionally, I cleaned out the bottom kitchen cabinets and scrubbed them with bleach.  More confined spaces.  Lots of fumes.

For some time after this cleaning frenzy, I knew that I had harmed my lungs.  How could I have been so stupid?  It took at least a year before I felt like my lungs were healthy again.

This study is one of those that can ONLY show correlation, not causation.  Questionnaires are not gold standard science.  But this kind of study can point to areas that need further study.

Chlorine is, as we know but, like me, don’t pay enough attention to–I mean, bleach is just so ubiquitous in all of our households–poisonous, toxic.

So, be careful with it.  And try other chemicals first–like hydrogen peroxide and baking soda…

Google a bit, and you’ll get some recipes to try.

Here’s the article, and the url is below:

Household bleach exposure increases infection rate in children, according to new research from the British Medical Journal.

The research team believes that the results of the study should be cause for concern in the area of public health. They are urging for more research on the subject.

The team analyzed the effects of bleach exposure among over 9000 children in the Netherlands, Barcelona, and Finland between the ages 6-12.

Their parents were asked to complete a questionnaire on the rates of flu, tonsillitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, otitis, and pneumonia their children had in the past year. They were also asked about bleach use in their households.

In Spain, 72 percent of participants used bleach, while in Finland, usage rates were only 7 percent. Additionally, all Spanish schools were cleaned with bleach, while the Finnish schools were not.

After analysis of all factors, the research team concluded that household bleach exposure increases infection rate in children.

The risk of one episode of flu infection was 20 percent higher, and recurrent tonsillitis risk was 35 percent higher among households that used bleach.

The overall risk of any infection was 18 percent higher in households that regularly used bleach.

The researchers wrote: “The high frequency of use of disinfecting cleaning products, caused by the erroneous belief, reinforced by advertising, that our homes should be free of microbes, makes the modest effects reported in our study of public health concern.”

Passive exposure to cleaning bleach in the home may have adverse effects on school-age children’s health by increasing the risk of respiratory and other infections. The high frequency of use of disinfecting irritant cleaning products may be of public health concern, also when exposure occurs during childhood,” they concluded.

The study showing that household bleach exposure increases infection rate in children was published in the journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine.

Interesting Information: The CDC’s Role in Undoing Vaccine Exemptions: the NACCHO Front Group

The CDC’s ROLE IN UNDOING VACCINE EXEMPTIONS:  THE NACCHO FRONT GROUP

It’s so scary to realize the level of government corruption–on behest of industry–that is going on in this country.

Here’s another tale of government corruption.  This time it’s the CDC, the Center for Disease Control.

In short, the CDC is funding (nearly $25 million a year) a pro-vaccine mandate for all through a lobbying group:  NACCHO.

No matter where you stand on vaccines, surely you will think that this kind of use of tax payer money is NOT OK.  It’s not transparent.  The role of regulatory agencies is NOT to push agendas that benefit industry, but to determine where good/solid science is.  Good/solid science is NOT possible when all the studies are in the hands of the people who make the products.  So, it’s a rigged system from the get go.

The CDC’s Role in Undoing Vaccine Exemptions: the NACCHO Front Group.

Some highlights:

In this case the CDC is funding a group called NACCHO:

NACCHO is The National Association of County and City Health Officials. If you briefly perused their website, you might be confused into thinking that they were a federal agency of sorts. First off, there’s the name. Many people associate “National Association” with something sort of official. The next thing that might throw you off is the way NACCHO describes themselves:

NACCHO’s members are the 2700 local health departments across the United States. NACCHO’s vision is health, equity, and security for all people in their communities through public health policies and services. NACCHO’s mission is to be a leader, partner, catalyst, and voice for local health departments in order to ensure the conditions that promote health and equity, combat disease, and improve the quality and length of all lives.

For the uninitiated, reading NACCHO’s self-description might cause you to reach the following conclusions:

NACCHO is a federal organization

Its members are all the local health departments

Somehow, this is a way for all the local health departments to all be connected together, probably there is a rule somewhere that says they should all coordinate themselves on a national basis (and there isn’t, the health of citizens is a state-level job, according to the U.S. Constitution)

As you’re probably getting used to by now with these articles, NACCHO could not be farther from any of that in reality, so let’s look at the details:

NACCHO takes in $25 million a year, most of which is coming from government grants, and the “CDC appears to be a primary funding source.”

So, now take a look at what happened with NACCHO and the Oregon Legislature with regard to personal belief exemptions for vaccines:

This article was spurred by repeated reports from members of the Oregon Legislature that they were being heavily lobbied by a group called NACCHO about Senate Bill 442. In general, NACCHO was characterized as a primary advocate of Senate Bill 442. This would make sense, since in July 2011 NACCHO issued a very clear policy statement that the time had come for states to eliminate personal belief exemptions:

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) urges that personal belief exemptions be removed from state immunization laws and regulations.

NACCHO acknowledges that there are states that may not be in a position to eliminate personal belief exemptions immediately. States that easily permit personal belief exemptions to immunizations have significantly higher rates of exemption than states that have more complex procedures. These states should begin a process to limit the availability of personal belief exemptions to the greatest degree possible. An initial step might be to review the process of applying for and receiving exemptions: the more educational and demanding the process, the lower will be the rate of exemptions. There should be more involved in the application process than simply signing a form.

This isn’t the first policy statement from NACCHO. A quick compilation of statements shows where the nonprofit group who get all their money from government grants is focused:

Do NACCHO’s policies share a common theme? Clearly:

Mandatory vaccines

National registries of vaccination status

More vaccines

All vaccines

Cradle to Grave

Government funding this kind of group is not ok.  This is dirty pool.  This is industry working to sell its products and to enlarge its markets.  Vaccines are now a $40 billion market, projected to be a $100 billion market in just a few years.  Wake up folks.  Where this is going is that you will not be able to get on a plane, train, metro, or be in the public is you are not fully vaccinated.  You will be listed as sexual predators are now…  Really…

ALTERED GENES, TWISTED TRUTH:  How GMOs TOOK OVER THE FOOD SUPPLY

Steven Drucker

Well, here’s a surprising and interesting story–that involves, of course, corruption within the FDA.  We should not be too, too surprised since in this era of late capitalism, we are living with many unhealthy products we were told were “safe” by those meant to protect our best interests.

Steven Drucker has unearthed the history of how we got untested  GMOs in the food supply, and guess what, Monsanto did not do it.  And that is perhaps why the story is so interesting.

Altered Genes, Twisted Truth: How GMOs Took Over the Food Supply.

Here’s a few excerpts:

In May 1992, the FDA made a blanket presumption that GE foods qualified to be categorized “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS). They then said that this meant these foods could be marketed without any safety testing at all.

“That actually is a blatant misrepresentation of US food law, but that was the FDA claim,” Steven says. “[They claim] there’s an overwhelming ‘scientific consensus’ they’re safe, and so safe that they don’t need to be tested. Therefore, the FDA let these foods into our market without the requirement of a smidgen of testing.

Moreover, they didn’t even require these foods be labeled, so the consumers at least would be informed about the major genetic reconfiguration that had occurred. This struck me as not only being unscientific but irresponsible and unethical. At the time, I had a hunch it was also illegal.”

As he continued researching the matter, that hunch was confirmed. Not only is the policy governing GMOs at odds with the science, it violates US law. At first, Steven did not think he was sufficiently qualified to launch a lawsuit to contest the FDA’s ruling. But as time went on, it became clear that no one else was willing to stick their neck out to do it.

And, of course, when one sticks out one’s neck and tries to get at the history or the truth, one gets immediately demonized, fired, banished, and so forth.

According to the FDA’s own admission, the agency has been operating for years under a policy to promote the US biotechnology industry. They decided it was more important to promote the industry and uphold the fragile image of GE foods rather than tell the truth and acknowledge the scientist warnings. So they covered up these warnings. Had Steven not sued, the warnings of the FDA’s own scientists still would be unknown to this day.

“We wouldn’t know the extent to which the FDA has been lying all these years. But fortunately, we do know now,” he says. “And what we know is that although the FDA scientists overwhelmingly concluded and warned their superiors that these foods entail unique risks, that they cannot be presumed safe, and that each one of them should be subjected to long-term rigorous toxicological testing, what the public heard from the FDA was that “The agency is not aware of any information showing that foods developed by these methods differ from other foods in any meaningful or uniform way.”

Now, it’s impossible, I think, for any rational man or woman to read just the sampling of memos from the FDA scientists that are posted on the website of the Alliance for Bio-Integrity… and feel that the FDA’s assertion is  anything other than a blatant fraud meant to mislead the public, mislead the world, and allow genetically engineered food a free pass to enter the market. It’s just an astounding fraud.”

For close to 20 years, the American public has been exposed to these largely experimental, untested foods, which its own scientists said entail unique risks and could not be presumed safe. The FDA claimed GMO’s could be presumed safe, and that there was an overwhelming scientific consensus backing up their decision, yet the evidence shows that is a bold-faced lie.  One document (document #8), is a letter from the FDA’s biotechnology coordinator to an official of Health Canada, written in the fall of 1991, just six months before the FDA’s ruling on GE foods.

Dr. James Maryanski’s letter acknowledges that there is no consensus about the safety of these foods within the scientific community. That admission is in the FDA’s own files. “Even if we didn’t have the memos from the scientists, we would have that admission, and yet, what happened? The FDA basically just buries that and lies about it all,” Steven says. What’s worse, because the FDA is so widely respected, and because the US—which is known to have strong food safety laws—said GMO’s were GRAS, it paved the way for easy approval in Canada as well. Europe also relaxed their stance on GMO’s as a result of the FDA’s lie.

And here’s an interesting twist in the story:  the molecular biologists did it.

These lobbying efforts were not backed by the biotechnology industry, mind you. There was no biotechnology industry at that time. This is a key theme of Steven’s book, because it’s easy to forget that there was a time before the biotechnology industry, and very few know who the leaders of the genetic engineering establishment were, or why the technology was invented in the first place. As much as most of us despise Monsanto for their reprehensible behavior, they could never have implemented their strategy if it weren’t for the prior misbehavior of the molecular biologists.

“The biotechnology industry—as irresponsible as they have been by and large—the main guilt lays at the feet of the mainstream molecular biology establishment; the scientists who were doing the research, getting the grants, and wanting to develop this technology. Most of them had altruistic goals. They thought this was going to be used to cure so many ills in the field of medicine… I think they eventually developed an ‘end justifies the means’ psychology…

But when you have so many highly influential, powerful scientists who are working together to convince the world that genetic engineering is inherently safe, and that the research they’re pursuing is safe, that can be somewhat dangerous. And it turned out being very dangerous for the world, I think.

One of the points made in the book very clearly, is that the burden of proof that was placed on new technologies and new products, which ordinarily requires the developer to substantiate the safety of the new technology and its products, got shifted. It got shifted because of the subterfuge and the fraud, and it was put on the shoulders of the critics, the people who had concerns. There were many good scientists who had concerns, but they were all of a sudden put into the position of, You’ve got to prove they’re dangerous,” and the burden of proving safety was removed.”

I hope you take some time to read this history because this kind of thing is happening in so many areas of our nation today.  This is late capitalism.  We cannot have a democracy as long as these kinds of events are allowed.  It is crucially important to know that you cannot trust what you are being told, that you have to look deeper–or we are never going to get out of this mess.

East Coast is Blue on the World Weather Map

I thought I’d share this weather map since it illustrates how “blue” the United States East Coast has been in January and February 2015.

It’s a visual representation of what we in Maine have been living through this winter.  In Maine, February broke the cold records.

The map also gives, I think, a clear picture of the warming world–something we might not realize if we’re living in a “blue” place.

Interesting Information: Annotated Bibliography for Vaccine Information

Interesting Information:  March 27, 2015

The mandatory vaccine issue is heating up in Maine.  And across the nation, 132 or so bills to mandate vaccines or to place hurdles in the way of opting out are being proposed.  If not stopped, you could be prevented from sending your children to school, from traveling on any public transportation, from entering a hospital, and so forth–if you are not “fully” vaccinated.

Since the Supreme Court ruled that vaccines are “unavoidably dangerous,” mandating them for anyone at any time is not democratic.

I put together this annotated bibliography that I hope will help make your vaccine choices more informed.

Annotated Bibliography for Vaccine Information

Many people today have questions about vaccines.  The government-sanctioned vaccine schedule now calls for now about 70 vaccines for children and more are in development.  States are removing vaccine exemptions and suggesting vaccines be made mandatory for everyone.

What’s the history of vaccines with regard to disease eradication?

Are vaccines safe for everyone?  What are the risks?  Which vaccines are safer than others and which might be more necessary than others?

Are vaccine damage statistics reliable?

What’s in vaccines?  Is mercury still in some vaccines?

Do vaccines provide life-time immunity?

What is “herd immunity” and is it a viable concept when applied to vaccines?

Can a person vaccinated with a live virus infect others?

Are childhood diseases dangerous for healthy children if contracted before puberty?

Are there unintended consequences to our current vaccine policy?

Is it ok for a society to “sacrifice” some children for the “good” of others?

Do we own our own bodies or not?

Whose answers are “right”?  Who can one trust?  The following is a SHORT annotated bibliography that some have found helpful for making informed vaccine decisions:

VACCINE ILLUSIONS, immunologist Dr. Tetyana Obukhanych (Harvard and Stanford work credentials) warns us that vaccines are not safe, that our vaccine policy has dangerous unintended consequences, and that the field of immunology has been highjacked by the market.  Immunologists don’t really know how our immune systems work, but that question is not being explored.  Instead, immunologists are being paid to develop more and more vaccines.  Easy download, easy to read and understand.

VACCINE EPIDEMIC:  HOW CORPORATE GREED, BIASED SCIENCE, AND COERCIVE GOVERNMENT THREATEN OUR HUMAN RIGHTS, Louise Kuo Habakus and Mary Holland.  The title is descriptive.

Louise Habakus runs the fearless parent web site.  Here’s her answer to an MD who recently wrote to her on her Facebook page suggesting that the unvaccinated costs us money when they get sick with a disease a vaccine could have prevented:  “Vaccination:  Is It Time to Pull the Wool From Your Eyes?”  http://fearlessparent.org/vaccination-is-it-time-to-pull-the-wool-from-your-eyes/  The article is introduced by Kelly Brogan, MD.

The “Vaccines Uncensored” web site has been done by a doctor who wants to remain anonymous since the penalties for even suggesting vaccines might be a problem are harsh.  Google the site with the title and click on it—typing in the web address results in a “site under construction” message.  There are many many good quotes from responsible medical people on this site.

Medicine:  Informed Choice/Informed Consent

I’ve heard two vaccine stories recently that are important to understanding the impact of the vaccine cultural war ongoing in America today.

I want to share them with you.

First, a young woman wrote that she recently burned her hand badly, and her husband took her to the emergency room of their local hospital.  They gave her morphine for the pain, which kind of put her out of it for a while.  The hospital staff asked her husband if his wife had had recent vaccine boosters.  He said that she had not and did not use vaccines.  Later, at home, the woman started itching.  She looked at the hospital papers and realized that she had been given a DtaP vaccine (Diphtheria, tetanus, and Pertussis) WITHOUT HER EXPRESS CONSENT.  That shot is a live virus and sheds, so she had to take precautions so that her children did not get infected with any of these three diseases.  She itched for several weeks after that shot, and she is still somewhat in shock that such a thing could happen to her in an American hospital when she had been drugged.

INFORMED CONSENT to medical procedures is a basic human right in this country.  This is a civil rights issue.  I hope that this story helps make you understand that in this present moment, you cannot count on medical personnel to honor your rights to informed consent.

Second, in my own family, we are eagerly anticipating the birth of my seventh grandchild in mid April.  This week, this family’s pediatrician sent them a letter saying that if the older two children did not get the three MMR vaccines, the family would be dropped from the practice–which means that these pediatricians will not be performing the well-baby check on our little newborn when she arrives.

The rationale is that they don’t want unvaccinated children in the waiting room infecting their vaccinated patients.  BUT WAIT, it’s the VACCINATED children who are shedding live virus disease.  So, it’s really the unvaccinated children who are at the most risk.  Let’s be clear that this behavior is medical bullying.  And let’s be clear that what this behavior is really all about is that without vaccines and well-baby checks that dispense vaccines, many pediatricians are going to be flat out of business.  And I truly hope that this kind of pediatric practice goes under–the sooner the better as they are promoting voodoo “science” and creating hysteria–all for the almighty dollar.  If it’s the case that they are truly uninformed on vaccine dangers, then they are stupid and no one should be going to them.

Remember, the Supreme Court ruled that vaccines are inherently dangerous.  That’s the reason why industry and doctors cannot be sued.  So I don’t care what your orientation to vaccines is, it is not ok to make anyone get a medical procedure that is deemed inherently dangerous.  That choice has to be made by those involved for themselves–and hopefully that choice will be an INFORMED one, which means those involved need to do deeper research than talking to their doctors.

Barbara Loe Fisher’s piece on the vaccine cultural war is circulating on the internet.  I hope you read it.  I hope that you go to the bottom and look at the section on vaccine myths.  Fisher started the National Vaccine Information Center after her own child was damaged.  She is not anti-vaccine for everyone.  She wants a safe vaccine policy, an open dialog about vaccines that looks at the actual science and history of them, and for INFORMED CHOICE.
