“Wyoming Mountain Crossings” Quilt is Done

And is is so, so cute!

It just fits into the hallway, so I can get a good picture of it.

To remind, this quilt’s crosses and border are 99% Cotton+Steel/Ruby Star Society fabrics, and it is one of the last projects of the past three years now of cutting up these fabrics in my stash. The neutrals are more mixed with other fabric lines.

This pantograph is new to me, and it has such lovely texture. Plus it is swirly and girly, and this quilt is going to a great niece in Wyoming. The pantograph is “Lovely” by Denise Schillinger and is sold by Urban Elementz. This quilt is my 210th quilt.

The scrappy back has some really fun fabrics–which helped further clean out my fabric stash.

I was hoarding this fox print by Tula Pink and the one below which is Cotton+Steel.

The bright green below on the upper far right is not C+Steel, but all the rest of the blocks are.

Owls and ice cream cones and crosses–what I love about the C+Steel/Ruby Star Society is the sophisticated whimsy they create. And I like and appreciate their plain and neutral fabrics too.

AND, “Wyoming Stars,” meant for my Wyoming great nephew, went on the longarm yesterday and got basted. Two passes are done. I will do more today.

And the journey continues…

Recent Projects

Good morning!

We had snow in the night and now…rain.  It’s also very warm for Maine in late January.

Here are some pics on my current projects.

This EPP project is HARD!  There is a real learning curve involved here, but I’m getting faster now.  This is “36-Ring Circus,” designed by JoAnne Lewis and available at Paper Pieces.  I did NOT buy the whole templates offered, just the ring kit, which includes the center “pointy” temlplate—shown in red on the first ring.

I am currently using Cotton+Steel fabrics for the centers and solids (pastels for the ring and darks for the ring centers and diamond shapes) for the rest.

 

Here’s the status of THE COLOR COLLECTIVES first project:  circles.  So far I’ve broken TWO of my machines with the invisible thread.  Probably, I did not release the needle tension enough.  I did release the foot pressure instead, which was clearly a mistake.  I don’t think anybody but ME is having these issues.  One machine is back—along with two spools of thread that the marvelous Marge Hallowell of Maine-ly Sewing donated to the cause and for me to experiment with and about which to get back to her.  I would love to make this quilt a bit bigger, to a lap size, but I may also use the second months’s block—a foundation pieced cross—to create a border.  I’m still movng around blocks on the design wall—which is kind of crazy as I need to fill in the holes first.  I could, also, use a matching thread for the circles if I have matching thread.  I do love these circles.

Recent intense weekend sewing produced this “Cool Sunday Morning Quilt” from SUNDAY MORNING QUILTS (Amanda Jean Nyberg and Cheryl Arkison).  It’s all in blue/green/grey Cotton+Steel low volume fabrics.  And it’s meant to be a companion to the recently finished “warm” quilt below, also made from C+S warm low volume fabrics—using Victoria Findlay Wolfe’s herringbone method.

 

Of course I also have three or four other projects developing or simmering, especially when I get to “playing” with some ideas and fabrics.  More on those later.

“LongTime Gone” Top Done

I wrote this post last week as well.  I’ve since finished quilting this quilt and am sewing on binding now.  Pics to follow in a few days.

Yep!  It’s been done since early September.

But as I said, I’ve been really busy.

To remind:  this quilt is “Long Time Gone,” a Jen Kingwell pattern.  This quilt was a challenge issued by the Mt. Battie Modern Quilt Guild, and we started making blocks in January.

I did not use Kingwell’s border treatment, opting instead for the piano keys border.

The quilt is 100% Cotton+Steel fabrics, and I like it a lot.

I’ll likely get it on the long arm any day now, especially as I finally settled on a backing.  I had a backing that didn’t work with a light grey thread, which I need for the front I think.  That’s how that goes.  The discarded backing will find a new place.  And I’ll show the one I chose when I’ve finished the quilt.

“Winter:  Dawn Trees” Quilt

This quilt is my own design, and I really love the way it came out.  I am a bit fixated on winter trees anyway, and, also, on the amazing Maine winter dawn light that coats the earth with a marmalade color that I love.  Winter in Maine is, actually, very colorful.  I chose the purple of the trees based on the purple shadows that appear over the snow in winter.

The quilt started in a workshop with Amy Friend (blog:  during quiet time) that used her newly issued book IMPROV PAPER PIECING.  I drew the three blocks on what was then EQ7.  I have since upgraded to EQ8.  (The other quilt that came out of that workshop was a big star made with Cotton+Steel fabrics–see below and see an earlier blog post).

Right now the quilt is hanging in my quilt room–which is a bit messy as I’m packing for a weekend quilty retreat.

Sarah Fielke’s “The Seasons” in the book she co-authored with  Kathy Doughty:  MATERIAL OBSESSION 2.

I also have a bare trees pattern designed by Carolyn Friedlander which I may start next winter.  I love the pattern.

Amy is a marvelous teacher, and the way she teaches her students how to design their own patterns is…wonderful.  And surprisingly easy.

December 2015 Quilty Update

The hexie project I took with me to Charleston, SC, for Thanksgiving is coming along.

Truth to tell, I’m addicted to it.

The center is nearly ready to sew together:

I’m should have let the teal stripe NOT line up, as the little doll head looks disembodied in the middle of a sea of strips.

Will I go back and take out tiny, tiny seams and restitch.  As much as I am a perfectionist, no.

This project is scrappy and is using my 2 1/2-inch squares and strips.

The missing unit is greens and is now ready for the neutrals.  And the project gets quite a few neutrals around this center.  You can see pictures in an earlier post.  The design is from Edyta Sitar.

Once again, the Sewline fabric glue pen is to English Paper Piecing (EPP) as a rotary cutter is to quilting.  Holy Cow what a find!

I’m using a dusty rose thread.  And this is a Bonnie Hunter block, as you can see from earlier posts.

I’m caught up with Bonnie Hunter’s second clue, released last Friday, for the 2015 mystery quilt, Allietare.
