Turkey Tracks: New Deck Railing and “To The Lake” Quilt

New Porch Railing and “To The Lake” Quilt

Lt. Gen. Jammie Mendall Philpott USAF, 1919-1999

Stephen Pennoyer, who is the most amazing carpenter, was here this week–working through the list of needed repairs.

When we first moved to Maine in June 2004, one of the first things we did was to build this deck.

I was all about NOT using plastic anything but keeping materials “natural.”  Husband John went along with me, though he did not agree on this one, as we put in a wooden railing.

Can I tell you that he spent every spring thereafter repainting that railing.

The bottoms of the wooden posts and the spindles all began rotting right away in this challenging winter climate.  Plus, this deck is on the north side of the house.

So, I was double delighted when Stephen came to rebuild the railing with plastic coated sleeves, etc.

No more painting, no more rot.  These railings are standing up super well on the front porch.

And here’s the best picture of all:  a finished quilt draped over the railing, à la a Bonnie Hunter photo of a finished quilt.  (See her blog at quiltville.com)

“At The Lake” is dedicated to my dad, Lt. Gen. Jammie Mendall Philpott USAF, 1919-1999, who was a fisherman heart and soul.  My dad was a decorated war hero, courageous, daring, kind, patient, and gentle.  He fished lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, and the ocean all across the world.  He taught all of us to fly fish and at one stage, made his own flies.  I remember him patiently unsnarling our fishing lines from nearby tree limbs and bushes until we got old enough to do it.  It would never have occurred to any of us to be squeamish about putting a worm on a hook–not when our corks would shortly start to bob and run under the water as a bream took the bait and ran.  We learned to clean those fish.  And, to cook and eat them with relish, too.  Those were good days.

I like the back of this quilt as much as the front and had great fun piecing it with the loon fabric, leftover blocks, and odd bits of fabric:

Here’s the binding:

And a few of the front motifs:

The writing on the cream fabric is from Lincoln’s Gettysburg address–which seemed fitting as my dad fought to protect this nation.

Here’s a corner:

I quilted with the Bishop’s Fan groovy board with a warm mustard thread.

Here’s a corner–and I liked the piano keys border a lot.

Interesting Information: The Foreskin: Big Business

The Foreskin:  Big Business

Wow!

Who knew…

This one takes “follow the money” to a new level…

Here’s a quote from the Living Whole blog, whose author did a bit of research:

(Thanks to niece Nancy for this follow-up post.)

In case you weren’t aware, the CDC for the first time ever, is issuing federal guidelines on circumcision. You see, Christians are realizing that you don’t need to chop off a part of the penis to be saved; parents in general are questioning a long-held practice that serves no useful purpose and leaves many boys who undergo the procedure disfigured (if you assume circumcision in and of itself doesn’t disfigure); and the rate of circumcision is down to 58% in the United States and they’re running out of foreskins to use in high-end cosmetics, face creams, medical products, and cosmetic testing.

Whoa, you didn’t know that baby foreskin is big business?

One baby foreskin can produce $100,000 worth of fibroblasts that can be used in all sorts of anti-aging goodies. The bio-medical and pharmaceutical companies rely specifically on the foreskins from infants to create medical products like insulin and interferon, skin grafts, eyelids, and other skin care treatments.

Interesting Information/Vaccines: Why I’m Putting Up Vaccine Posts

Interesting Information/Vaccines:  May 6, 2015

Why I’m Putting Up Vaccine Posts

The vaccine issue is big and it’s complex.

The mainstream media does not cover it well or fairly.

Myth, not science, permeates this issue.

I can break this issue into TWO big parts:  vaccine efficacy/danger/unintended consequences AND the civil right of a sovereign individual to make his/her own informed choice about what gets put into his/her own body or the body of his/her child.

What I’m trying to do is to create a body of posts that will enable people to follow my links to reputable information from reputable people.  All of which means some of you are hearing much more about vaccines on this blog than you want.  Be patient.  I have about five more posts, and then I’m done.  More or less done.

Anyone who wants more information than they are going to get from the press or their doctor will have a place to go to explore and to thoughtfully think through this issue.

What you do with the information is your own business.

But I need to be able to sleep at night, and that means I have to share what I have read/researched that I think is important for anyone to consider.

Vaccines can and do cause harm for some people more than others–although there are no long-term studies targeted toward seeing ALL the outcomes of vaccines and no studies comparing vaccinated/unvaccinated people.  The Supreme Court ruled that vaccines are unavoidably dangerous–which is why no one can sue the vaccine makers/industry.  Or, the docs who give vaccines.  So, before you start down any vaccine path, take a deep breath and inform yourself before consenting to a practice that can permanently harm for life.

How many folks are being hurt?  We have no idea as the VARS reporting system does not work.

New Bag

Those of you who have read this blog very long know that I LOVE the “Bow Tucks Tote” designed by Penny Sturges.

Can I tell you that my old one was in frays and tatters.

So this fabric–some of which was bought at Houston LAST OCTOBER (which tells you how long I’ve been putting off making a new bag)…

…became THIS new bag yesterday:

IMG_0350

Part of what I love about this bag are the pockets–which I can design to hold the things I carry daily.  There are pockets that fit my wallet, my phone, my glasses case, lipsticks, pens, and so on.

Interesting Information/Vaccines: Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Interesting Information:  May 4, 2015

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Thimersol/Ethyl Mercury

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is an environmental activist.

(Yes, he’s Robert Kennedy’s son.)

Robert Kennedy would be proud of him as RFK, Jr., has spent his life trying to make the world a better place.

RFK, Jr., is NOT anti-vaccine.  He vaccinated his own children.  (I personally wonder if he would now.)

Back in the early 2000’s, Kennedy was speaking against the toxins spewed by coal-fired plants, and he kept running across women who asked him to investigate the connections between mercury in vaccines and autism.  Many, many women told him that their children were fine until they had one of the vaccines containing mercury.

Eventually, Kennedy did start to research, and he was horrified with what he found.  He meticulously documented his investigatory trail and when he was finished in 2005, he tried to get mainstream media to publish the results.  NO ONE WOULD PUBLISH/AIR/TAKE SERIOUSLY HIS WORK.

You know what, you need to judge for yourself what he found–which includes that fact that a US Senator successfully hid information connecting ethyl mercury in vaccines, now called thimersol, by placing the federal documents in lock-down within the confines of the Homeland Security Bill of 2002.  Yes, the science has been hidden from American citizens–in order to protect the vaccine industry and those who have profited form it.

Here’s the url to Kennedy’s journey.  You will find it is cited.  You’ll also find it enormously upsetting and interesting.

Here’s an interview with Bill Maher–one of the few media people who have been willing to shed some bit of tiny light on the problems with an industry that has no controls on its behavior and on government regulatory agencies that are now run by industry.

The media and vaccines – Bought Movie.

Kennedy’s book is  THIMEROSOL:  LET THE SCIENCE SPEAK:   The Evidence Supporting the Immediate Removal of Mercury—a Known Neurotoxin—from Vaccines.

“The Foreskin:  Why Is It Such a Secret in North America?”

When my sons were born, no one questioned the removal of the foreskin on their penises.

Everyone just did it.

I vaguely recall that “cleanliness” and “infection” descriptors were mobilized, but no one in my life mounted any sort of argument why the removal wasn’t a good idea.

I didn’t know one single person (except maybe, now that I think about it, my father, in a confidence my mother whispered to me) who didn’t ok this procedure.

Oh my goodness.  The FIRST thing I would do now is to research any kind of medical procedure.

Well, Spoony Quine, a “science-oriented writer in Seattle,” dug a little deeper.

Her piece is absolutely fascinating, especially to someone whose field is Cultural Studies.

Here’s a quick quote:

It may come as a shock to find that in the U.S., many widespread popular beliefs about the penis today are actually based on the same Victorian Era quackery rather than medical science.  Indeed, the non-therapeutic circumcision of infant boys has continued to be medicalized in the U.S., and to a lesser extent in Canada, due to such persistent beliefs.

Apparently we’ve been depriving our men of a normal capacity of sexual stimulation–not unlike those done to women…

…and underlying it all is a belief that sex is bad…

And apparently most people, doctors included, don’t know how the foreskin is meant to work.  Apparently most textbooks don’t even have accurate pictures.

FASCINATING!

That Special Moment in Quilting

I spent most of Friday quilting a quilt on Lucy the longarm.

And by Friday late afternoon took the quilt off Lucy:

IMG_0335

I was VERY pleased with the sort of mustard gold thread color I used as it worked really well on the front and the back:

IMG_0337

I trimmed the quilt, sewed on the binding, and am now spend my nights sewing it down:

IMG_0339

I cut up all of this quilt’s scraps–so that “the decks are cleared” so to speak.  And THAT is the special quilt moment–and it’s so special because it’s time to let other projects emerge, to let my imagination dance, to move on into the quilting future.

Fabrics for a new and much needed purse:

The pulling out of fabrics all folded together for another long-planned quilt:

And the return to the quilt blocks that call to me often, often:

Oh my goodness!  Quilting is so exciting!

Interesting Information/Vaccines: Testimony to the Maine Legislature, Suzanne Humphries MD

Testimony to the Maine Legislature:  Dr. Suzanne Humphries

Tomorrow the Maine Legislature–in a stunning and hysterical political piling on and with total disregard of the actual science and history of vaccines–will hear testimony about removing parental rights to make informed choices about their children’s’ health.  The specific issue here is vaccines, yes, but this issue is larger and involves ongoing state and medical tyranny about a sovereign individual’s right to control his/her own body and that of their children.  The next move will be to compel adults to undergo an intensive “catch up” of their own vaccine situations.

Look around you:  children ARE being taken away from their parents to undergo invasive, caustic, and toxic medical treatments that way too often do not work.

Here is Dr. Suzanne Humphries testimony to the Maine legislature.

I hope you read it–because if you do you will see what is so, so wrong with this vaccine situation.

Interesting Information/Vaccines: The Flu Vaccine

Interesting Information/Vaccines:  April 30, 2015

 The Flu Vaccine

Here in America, we’re pretty much past the massive push to get the flu vaccine that starts each fall.

But in Australia, fall is just beginning.

Only, there is a history in Australia regarding the flu vaccine and its use in children under five.

Back in 2010, there was a major incident with Flumax:

http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/flu-vaccination-ban-goes-national-after-fever-convulsions-in-children-20100422-tglp.html

And in 2013, a repeated problem as some young children were again vaccinated by docs who were, apparently, asleep at the wheel:

http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/western-australia/kids-get-banned-fluvax-vaccine/story-fnhocxo3-1226625149176

Now, in 2015, young children are, again, being targeted for the flu shot.

Only, you should know that ANY vaccine can be terribly dangerous to you or your children–even if the resulting outcome can be just called “a bad batch” of the drugs.   So, proceed with care…

* * *

In America, we vaccinate very young children with the flu shot…

You should know that flu shots in America still contain mercury.  Thimersol is ethyl mercury, a more toxic mercury than the original mercury used in vaccines.  And you should know that there are hundreds of strains of flu running around the world, but only THREE in whatever vaccine you might opt to get.  So, flu shots are a crap shoot.  They’re also very, very, very profitable.

Formaldehyde, a known toxin, is included to kill the live flu viruses in the vaccine.  But, does it kill with certainly ALL the virus components?  And what’s it doing to YOU?

Me, I’m thinking my immune system is much better protection against flu than a vaccine full of mercury and other toxins which will compromise my immune system.

Here’s a little video discussing the flu vaccine.  It’s one of the outtakes from BOUGHT, the movie.

Bought Movie Bonus Short- The Flu Vaccine – Bought Movie.

Here’s a quote from the text:

In 2001, out of the 60,000 people that the CDC said died of Flu that year in the United States there were 18 confirmed deaths from Influenza. I mean that’s just a huge discrepancy. What they do is they pull all deaths in the winter that have anything to do with respiratory symptoms together and they all label them as Flu deaths whether they’ve even documented Flu or not. And so the CDC loves to promote the Flu vaccine because the CDC’s been very much in cahoots with the industry. This vaccine doesn’t work, it’s a waste of our money, it’s a waste of our time. Many people who’ve received the flu shot report getting the flu shortly after they’ve gotten the shot.

When the CDC, OUR GOVERNMENT–which is supposed to be protecting US–plays fast and loose with numbers like this example, you know that corruption is afoot.

Play Day

Last Tuesday was “play day”–with  Megan Bruns, who had a day off before starting a new job.

We headed south to Alewives Quilting (Damariscotta Mills) to see the new Cotton + Steel white collection and Megan was looking for fabric for pillows.

Here’s the collection minus the typewriter fabric, which already sold out.

IMG_0330

Next we went to Aboca Beads in Damariscotta to make some earrings.  Here are mine:

It’s so fun to make earrings!

Lunch was at the River Grill in Damariscotta–they make the best mussels in the whole world.

Coffee for the road at the little bookstore across from the River Grill.

And a stop by Mainely Sewing to visit with Marge Hallowell on the way home.

It was a FUN play day!
